Flexible raised floor solution for Australian Data Centres Mitchell.

Schneider Electric, the leading specialists in energy efficiency and automation, have recently worked with Australian Data Centres (ADC) in Mitchell, ACT to deploy an 835 square metre raised floor solution on the first level of the Tier III Data Centre. The deployment has allowed ADC to expand their offering, by installing more racks and containment systems.

A privately Australian owned data centre, ADC offers one of the most flexible solutions in the market for commercial and Federal Government Clients. ADC has been fully operational since 2014 and sits on the Federal Governments Data Centres Suppliers Panel.

Schneider Electric has a longstanding relationship with ADCM and has offered a solution for many key pieces of infrastructure in the facility, including transformers, power monitoring systems, breakers, SCADA solutions, and racking. With sustainability being an important focus point, the centre is operating very efficiently through flexible cooling systems and a building management to minimise unnecessary energy usage.

Challenge

The challenge was to deploy a tile that was aesthetically pleasing, structurally sound and could cater for heavy racks. ADC needed to feel confident that the product was tried and tested in other facilities, and that it could support modern and dense IT equipment.

"Raised floor is a critical component of the data centre. You put a ton of load on the floor and you have to feel confident that the raised floor can support the demands and weight of highly populated racks and technology," said Chris Carr, Operations Director at ADC.

Solution

Following a small tendering process, the product selected for the project was Schneider Electric’s UniFlair High Density Raised Floor solution.

"The solution offered an aesthetically pleasing tile that was easy to work with, to cut and do penetrations into. The actual air grill and solutions that backed up the product itself were very flexible. The installer was efficient and did a great job," Chris said.

Bottom line

The project was completed in June 2016. It was the largest deployment of the UniFlair Raised Floor solution in the Pacific region by Schneider Electric.

"Given that the flooring is an integral part of the Data Centre, I had very high expectations. Working with a trusted partner in Schneider Electric, I was confident that the product is excellent. The air grills were beyond what I was hoping for and the installation and the finished product look fantastic." said Chris.

There is still more work to be done at the ADC facility with 2,000 square metres of raised floor to be installed on the second floor of the data centre.

"Working with the Schneider Electric team was fantastic. They understood that the floor was a substantial investment and a critical part of the Data Centre. The work was completed very professionally," said Chris.
